Marianne Sung

Anyone standing before the paintings of Toronto-based Korean-Canadian artist Marianne Sung is compelled to pause for a moment. Her canvases go beyond simply replicating landscapes; they radiate warmth and light, quietly evoking the magic and nostalgia tucked deep within the viewer's heart. This sensuous and profound work has already garnered fervent praise from the North American press and critics. First gaining attention when featured in the art publication Create Magazine Issue #27 in 2021, the artistic power her works hold in everyday spaces was also highlighted in the Living/Style section of the Toronto Star on August 5, 2023, and in the renowned interior design magazine House & Home in October of the same year.
The primary reason her work captures the eye with such unique charm is that the canvas itself functions as a "light-producing device." This becomes evident in her representative Sunset Dream series. In these works, the artist uses silver spray paint as a base, creating a magical surface that shifts and reflects differently depending on the direction of the light and the viewer's movements. Rather than painting a realistic, exact replica of nature, she transforms the landscape into a fantastical, surreal space through metallic reflection. As the artist herself noted, "I am fascinated by how quickly the sunset passes, how it maintains both intensity and softness at the same time before fading away." This series is a tender attempt to forever capture the fleeting beauty and transience of those moments on canvas through the physical movement of light.
