Jean Yoon

Do you remember "Umma," who used to greet us with a bright smile whenever we turned on the TV? Actor Jean Yoon (Yoon Jin-hee) was loved across Canada for her portrayal of a warm yet strong Korean mother in the sitcom <Kim's Convenience>. However, if you only know her as a famous actor, you have seen only half of the immense dedication she has poured into our Korean community. Born in Illinois and moving to Toronto at a very young age, she grew up facing the identity confusion of a 1.5-generation immigrant and absorbing the invisible discrimination against Asian actors. Determined to create her own stage if opportunities were not given, she founded a group called "Loud Mouth Asian Babes" in 1995 and began amplifying the voices of Asian women through theater. Today, we invite you to look into the world of Jean Yoon—who, beyond being an actor, is a playwright and poet who has molded every corner of our lives into art.
