B.C. Wildfires: Summerland Residents Return as More Fires Burn

In British Columbia, the Bald Range wildfire has led to the completion of damage assessments in Summerland, with a portion of evacuated residents beginning to return to their homes. Officials are hopeful for further returns in the coming days, though they caution that fire conditions can change rapidly. Across the province, over 120 wildfires were active as of Sunday evening, many ignited by lightning. The B.C. Wildfire Service anticipates hotter and drier weather in the upcoming week, potentially exacerbating existing fire situations.

International firefighting crews from Australia, Mexico, and other Canadian provinces are assisting B.C. efforts. The dynamic weather conditions, including strong winds and dry fuel, contribute to the rapid spread and erratic behaviour of many fires. This is a contrast to the more consistent fire behaviour experienced in other regions, like Australia.

The Bald Range wildfire, located in the south Okanagan, was over 210 square kilometres as of Sunday. Another significant fire, the Pear Lake wildfire near Clinton, has grown to exceed 1,590 square kilometres, making it the largest active wildfire in the province. The Brunswick Creek fire complex near Boston Bar, encompassing the Brunswick Creek and Ainslie Creek fires, covers over 740 square kilometres and has resulted in the closure of Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon.

Smoke is expected to persist in central and southern B.C. due to lingering conditions. Residents who were displaced by the fires are being notified about damage to their properties and provided with support following the completion of assessments. Efforts are underway to facilitate the return of most affected residents in the near future.
