Fare Evasion Fines Skyrocket for GO Transit and UP Express

Metrolinx is implementing a substantial increase in fare evasion fines for its GO Transit and UP Express services, effective September 8th.

The penalty for a first-time fare evasion offense will jump from the current $35 to $200. This significant rise is part of a broader strategy to curb fare evasion, which Metrolinx states costs the transit system approximately $21 million annually in lost revenue.

Repeat offenders will also see escalating fines. For each subsequent offense after the first, the fine will increase by $100. Upon reaching the fifth offense, a provincial offense notice will be issued, with the final fine determined by the chief justice of the Ontario Court of Justice. Those with six or more offenses could face a court summons and potential fines of up to $1,000 if convicted.

Metrolinx emphasizes that fare evasion impacts the reliability and sustainability of the transit system for all users. The agency is reminding passengers to ensure they tap their PRESTO card at the beginning and end of every trip and to carry valid identification for any applicable discounted fares.

These changes were proposed earlier this year by the province. For comparison, the Toronto Transit Commission has fare evasion fines that can reach up to $425 or may result in a criminal charge.
