Israel Launches Investigations into Gaza Deaths

The Israeli military has initiated internal investigations into two significant incidents in Gaza: the death of six-year-old Hind Rajab in January 2024 and the killings of 15 emergency and aid workers in March 2025. These decisions were made after reviews by the military's Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism. The military stated that these examinations are part of its obligations under international and domestic law to review exceptional combat incidents.

One of the examined incidents involved the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers in April 2024. For that case, the military concluded there was "no reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct." The military also indicated that it conducts a wide range of missions in a complex operational environment.

Both Hind Rajab's death and the killings of the Palestinian medics drew international attention. Rajab was reportedly trapped in a car for hours, calling for help, with her family already deceased, before an ambulance was dispatched. Contact was lost, and her body, along with those of the rescuers and her relatives, was recovered days later. The aid workers' bodies were reportedly found buried in the sand near damaged vehicles.

Palestinian organizations and rights groups have called for international investigations, emphasizing that domestic probes often result in lenient sentences or no convictions. A spokesperson for the Israeli organization Yesh Din stated that indictments are rare relative to the number of reported offenses by soldiers.

In June, a United Nations Human Rights Council report suggested evidence of Israeli security forces deliberately targeting Palestinian children, which Israel has dismissed as propaganda. The Israeli military maintains it does not deliberately target civilians and that militant groups endanger them by using them for cover. The military stated it facilitated the evacuation of the Red Crescent workers' bodies from what it described as an active combat zone.
