Montreal bids final farewell to legendary jazz pianist Oliver Jones

Montreal recently held a funeral service for Oliver Jones, a distinguished jazz pianist who passed away on July 22 at the age of 91. The service took place at Union United Church, an historic Black congregation located near Jones's childhood home in the Little Burgundy area. This venue held special significance as it was also the site of his first public performance at age five, which marked the beginning of his extensive career.

Jones, a figure deeply connected to Montreal's cultural landscape, was celebrated for his decades-long musical journey. His contributions to jazz were recognized with numerous accolades, including multiple JUNO Awards, honorary doctorates, and appointments to prestigious orders such as those of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada.

His association with the Montreal Jazz Festival was particularly notable, with performances there throughout his career, including an annual tradition between 1981 and 1999. Jones was widely considered synonymous with both the Little Burgundy neighbourhood and the renowned festival.

Prior to the funeral service, a public visitation was held at Montreal City Hall, allowing many to pay their respects. The final service featured musical tributes, prayers, and speeches, celebrating the rich legacy of the beloved musician.
