Ratko Mladic, Former Bosnian Serb Military Leader Convicted of Genocide, Dies

Ratko Mladic, a former general convicted of genocide and other war crimes, has died in UN custody. His lawyer confirmed his passing, stating he had spent his final months in the hospital ward of the detention centre near The Hague. Mladic was found responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where over 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed, an event described as Europe's worst atrocity since World War II. His forces also subjected the besieged capital city of Sarajevo to years of artillery and mortar attacks, resulting in approximately 10,000 civilian deaths. The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) determined that Mladic's actions were part of a plan for 'ethnic cleansing' to create a Greater Serbia. He and other leaders, including Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic, were implicated in this criminal conspiracy. Mladic, often referred to as the "Butcher of Bosnia," consistently denied the court's jurisdiction and the charges against him. His conviction for genocide was upheld on appeal in 2021, and he was serving a life sentence. Earlier in his military career, Mladic commanded the Bosnian Serb army following the breakup of Yugoslavia. His forces were responsible for numerous brutal acts, including the abuse of prisoners and the use of UN peacekeepers as human shields. He was eventually arrested in 2011 after years on the run.
