Markham Indy Race Opening Day Canceled Due to Unfinished Track

The first day of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy race in Markham was marred by a complete cancellation of all on-track activities. The reason cited for the disruption was the street circuit's incomplete status and failure to gain approval from safety inspectors. This led to widespread disappointment among fans who had gathered for the event's opening. Race president Jeff Atkinson issued an apology for the organizers' lack of readiness and acknowledged the negative experience for attendees. The event, which has moved from its long-time venue in Toronto's Exhibition Place, is slated to return in 2027, with organizers planning to incorporate feedback from this year's event. Marcus Ericsson ultimately won the race on Sunday. Significant public investment had been allocated to the event, with the Ontario government contributing $1.5 million and the federal government providing $3.5 million, alongside over $12 million in capital spending by the City of Markham for infrastructure improvements related to the race.
