South Korean District Accelerates Semiconductor Cluster Development

Gwangsan District, located in Gwangju City, is rapidly preparing for the development of a new semiconductor cluster, a project recently announced by the national government. The district, with a population of 380,000, serves as a key gateway to the region, boasting proximity to KTX Gwangju Songjeong Station and Gwangju Airport.

Park Byeong-gyu, the re-elected mayor of Gwangsan District, expressed optimism that the semiconductor cluster will attract young talent from across the country. To support this initiative, the district has established a 'Semiconductor Cluster Development Support Team' following the government's announcement in early June. This team aims to expedite the complex permit and licensing procedures, creating a fast-track system for businesses.

The district anticipates a significant population increase, potentially adding around 150,000 residents, and an annual boost of over 30 billion won in local tax revenue. Plans are in motion to enhance educational, cultural, and transportation infrastructure, create eco-friendly residential areas, and establish a semiconductor polytechnic high school to accommodate the influx of young professionals.

Mayor Park highlighted the suitability of the Gwangju Airport site for the cluster, citing its ample, flat terrain and the fact that much of the land is state or public property, minimizing lengthy land compensation processes. The location's excellent connectivity to the KTX station and highways is considered advantageous for logistics and talent recruitment.

Addressing potential issues, the mayor noted that the recent integration of Gwangju City and South Jeolla Province provides a framework for addressing water supply needs at a regional level. The relocation of a military base, another potential concern, is reportedly being supported at the national level.
