Endangered Sturgeon Given a Fighting Chance at B.C. Hatchery

The Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre in Vanderhoof, B.C., is providing a unique opportunity for the public to learn about and support the survival of the critically endangered Nechako white sturgeon. This ancient species, which has existed for millions of years, is now at severe risk due to environmental changes and habitat pressures, with only around 550 adult fish remaining in the wild.

The hatchery, established in 2014, plays a vital role in maintaining the genetic diversity of the Nechako white sturgeon. Visitors can participate in daily tours during the summer months to see these prehistoric fish up close and learn about the conservation efforts underway. These tours aim to increase public awareness about the sturgeon's plight and the importance of protecting them.

The dramatic decline in the sturgeon population is attributed to several factors, including historical overfishing, pollution, habitat alteration from construction, and changes in river flow following the construction of the Kenney Dam in the 1950s. The centre emphasizes that without intervention, the species could be lost.

Inside the facility, juvenile sturgeon are raised in specialized tanks using recirculated river water until they are one or two years old before being released back into the wild. This process is crucial for bolstering the wild population and ensuring the species' long-term survival. The hatchery welcomes approximately 2,000 to 3,000 visitors annually, with tours available year-round.

Students, from high school to university level, also contribute to the hatchery's mission by assisting with research and public education during the summer. These young conservationists often participate in juvenile release events, creating a full-circle experience as they help reintroduce young sturgeon into their natural habitat, underscoring the community's commitment to this vulnerable species.
