Stellantis Considers Brampton Plant Closure and Sale, Union Reports

The automotive manufacturer Stellantis is reportedly considering the closure and potential sale of its Brampton, Ontario assembly plant, according to Unifor, the national union representing auto workers. Unifor president Lana Payne indicated that the union received this information from Stellantis, though formal written notice as required by their collective agreement has not yet been provided. The agreement mandates at least one year's notice for such actions.

Payne expressed deep disappointment, calling the news a "gut punch" to union members. The plant was previously slated for retooling for Jeep Compass production, a process that began in early 2024 but was paused. In October 2025, Stellantis informed the union of its intent to move Jeep Compass production to the United States, which would lead to the plant's indefinite idling.

Stellantis, in a statement, said its current focus remains on identifying a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton Assembly plant and that it has "nothing to announce at this time" as it prepares for collective bargaining. Unifor plans to address the potential closure during upcoming contract negotiations and is advocating for federal policies to protect Canada's auto manufacturing sector.

Union leadership from Unifor Local 1285 emphasized their commitment to fighting for the plant's jobs, stating that closure is not an option and expressing confidence in finding a path back to vehicle production. Approximately 2,200 Unifor members are employed at the Brampton facility.

The City of Brampton has stated its support for Unifor and the plant workers, having taken steps to protect the site's future for automotive production through zoning. City officials expressed hope for a resolution that preserves automotive manufacturing in Brampton and allows workers to return.
