Chilgok County Aims to Boost Economy with Low-Speed Modular Vehicles and Agricultural Innovation

Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province is embarking on an ambitious plan to foster the development of low-speed modular vehicles, targeting them as a new economic engine for the region. This initiative is supported by the county's designation as a 'Modular Low-Speed Vehicle Global Innovation Regulatory Free Zone' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Under this program, Chilgok plans to invest 19.7 billion won by 2030 to research and develop modular low-speed vehicles. These vehicles are designed to operate at speeds below 40 km/h and feature a shared basic platform, allowing for interchangeable bodies to suit various applications such as camping, personal mobility for the disabled, and logistics. The modular design is expected to reduce development costs and facilitate diverse, small-batch production.

To support industrial growth, Chilgok is also developing the Buksam Opyeong General Industrial Complex on a 1.22 million square meter site, with an investment of 343.3 billion won, aiming for completion by 2031. Its proximity to the Gumi Industrial Complex makes it an ideal location for a materials and parts industrial cluster. The recent opening of Buksam Station on the Daegyeong Line broad-gauge railway is expected to improve commuting for employees.

In agriculture, Chilgok is focusing on transforming its farming sector, building on its status as the second-largest producer of Korean melons in the country. The county is implementing hydroponic farming techniques for melon cultivation to reduce labor requirements and address an aging workforce. Efforts are also underway to create value-added products from melon rinds, such as wallets and bags, with future plans to integrate smart farming technologies.

Additionally, Chilgok is enhancing its local festivals. The 'Honey Beer Festival,' held annually in July, is being developed into a family-friendly event featuring local honey, craft beer, water play areas, and food. In October, the county will host its inaugural 'Burger Festa,' celebrating the local burger culture influenced by a nearby U.S. military base by showcasing various artisan burgers.
