Toronto Councillor Paula Fletcher to Retire After 23 Years

Toronto city councillor Paula Fletcher has announced her retirement from municipal politics, confirming she will not run for re-election in the October municipal elections. Fletcher, who has represented Toronto-Danforth Ward 14 for 23 years, shared her decision on social media, stating it was a moment of clarity during a paddle board excursion on Lake Ontario.

She expressed gratitude for the privilege of serving her community and believes it is time to transition leadership to a new generation. Fletcher indicated that she will complete her current term, which concludes in mid-November.

Reflecting on her tenure, Fletcher highlighted several key accomplishments she is proud of, including revitalizing waterfront areas, efforts to restore the Don River, and the development of new community spaces like Biidaasige Park. She also pointed to the creation of affordable housing projects and the establishment of new cultural facilities.

Specific achievements mentioned include integrating social services like the Red Door Shelter and Crow's Theatre into condo developments, installing a roof over Greenwood Rink, and constructing a Chinese archway in the east end. Fletcher also noted her work on enhancing local parks, improving pedestrian safety, and advocating for separated bike lanes on Danforth Avenue.
