Kim Min-seok Leads First Round in Democratic Party Leadership Race

The Democratic Party's leadership race kicked off with its first regional convention in the Chungcheong region. Candidate Kim Min-seok emerged victorious in this initial round, garnering 45.05% of the vote from party members. This places him slightly ahead of Jeong Cheong-rae, who received 44.61%, and Song Young-gil, with 10.34%.

The voting, which included online and ARS (phone) submissions from party members in Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong, and North Chungcheong provinces, revealed differing results by area. While Jeong Cheong-rae performed strongly in Daejeon and Sejong, Kim Min-seok secured more votes in the more populous South Chungcheong and North Chungcheong provinces.

This regional result is significant as it's the first indication of the party's preference among its active membership. The final decision for the party leadership will be determined by a combination of delegate votes, party member votes, and public opinion polls. The current system uses a preferential voting method where the first-choice votes are initially tallied, with second-choice votes being considered if no candidate secures an outright majority.

Candidate Kim Min-seok expressed gratitude for the support, seeing the result as a sign of the party members' desire for change and innovation. He acknowledged the upcoming rounds, particularly in regions where rivals have strong connections, but expressed optimism for his campaign's overall trajectory.

Meanwhile, Jeong Cheong-rae framed the close result as a positive outcome despite facing attacks from other candidates, appealing for continued support from party members. Song Young-gil used his speech to address past election performance and emphasize his focus on current issues like housing and economic stabilization, drawing analogies to technological advancements to illustrate his vision.
